Power of a Great Website Design

One of the most underestimated facets of online business is the look and feel of the website. By making sure your website is attractively and efficiently designed, you can ensure the online aspect of your company gets (and keeps) the traffic it deserves. In this article, we’ll go over some of the ways you can make your website work well and look great, as well as some of the benefits you can expect to see from doing so.

Great website design is easier than most people think. It doesn’t take much to keep a website running smoothly and looking nice, and one of the most common mistakes made by web designers is doing too much. For example, most people actually find embedded music or sounds irritating, and therefore should probably not be included unless relevant to your company’s field (i.e. production studios or guitar retailers). Embedded video, however, is often an effective way to introduce your company to first-time viewers.

Users also like to be in control as much as possible when viewing a website. There should be no pop-ups, nothing should play unless they tell it to, and if you do have sound or music, there should be relevant toggles or volume for it. Keep your site easy to navigate and read. Let the viewer feel like he or she is in command of the experience while viewing your website – a common error is making the user feel like they are being “pulled along” instead of “browsing through.”

The benefits of having a well-designed website are obvious, as are the detrimental effects of having a poor one. A well-designed site will not only attract viewers but will keep them there.  I can’t count the number of times I’ve immediately hit the “back” button because a website was irritating or confusing or ugly. If a user enjoys your site, he or she will spread the word, and word of mouth travels faster on the internet than anywhere else. A simple message board-based support network for customers will let them feel appreciated and looked after, while minimizing the amount of effort on your part. Message boards are easy to maintain, and large boards can be managed by a few administrators and the nice thing about them is that customers will often solve each other’s problems, keeping your staff from having to do anything at all. Creating a well-designed website is not something to be ignored.
